The founder of Los Gatos-based Calera, Brent Constantz, has been working in medical-grade cement for almost 20 years. A few years ago he discovered that by injecting carbon dioxide into his mixture, he could create a strong cement more efficiently. When Constantz asked friend and investor Vinod Khosla where he might get a reliable supply of CO2, Khosla didn't hesitate to give the obvious answer, Constantz says.
With a feedstock of 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions from electrical power generators and another five to six billion tons of emissions caused by Calera's competion that Constantz says he can eradicate with Calera's product, it looks as if his company is poised to be a huge success financially and also changes the dynamics of the carbon-emissions mitigation game.
