The University of California at San Diego (UCSD) has a long history of self-reliance when it comes to energy. By embracing clean energy technologies in its operations and by collecting data to build an ambitious long-term sustainability plan, UCSD also offers a glimpse into the future.

An on-site cogeneration plant, completed in the 1990s, produces more than 87% of electricity consumed. But beginning in 2006, the campus challenged itself by developing an energy-independent microgrid. Today, the campus produces 92% of its own energy. It’s striving to go further with a combination of new clean energy resources, additional on-site generation and storage, and innovative demand-reduction strategies. The cornerstone of this effort is the OSIsoft PI System, which gathers data from hundreds of sensors, serves as a universal translator that synchronizes and coordinates operations of the campus’ complex energy assets, and supports UCSD’s efforts to create a sustainable environment for learning and innovation.

Byron Washom, Director of Strategic Energy Initiatives, UCSD

Byron is responsible for energy management policy to achieve UCSDs' goals for quantum improvements in energy management and greenhouse gas reductions. Prior to UCSD, he was the CEO for 20 years of a due diligence firm that specialized in cleantech, and he served as senior international advisor to the World Bank and DOE. He is a four-time Rockefeller Foundation Grantee and a former Heinz Endowment Grantee for early commercialization of cleantech into developing countries. Byron was also Founder and President of Advanco Corp which in 1984 set the long-standing world records for solar electric conversion efficiency at 29.4%.

Andrew Fanara, Sustainability Strategist, OSIsoft

Andrew’s primary role is to assist OSIsoft’s diverse customer base achieve their corporate sustainability objectives by leveraging their use of the PI System, the industry standard in enterprise infrastructure, for management of real-time data and events. In addition, he plays an active role helping to manage the relationships of its growing number of data center clients. Previously, Andrew spent 15 years at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where he was responsible for engaging the high-tech community to raise the visibility of the energy efficiency opportunities in data centers. He also led the ENERGY STAR® Product Specifications Development Team to identify products with superior energy and water efficiency.

David M. Zeglinski, Global Business Development Mgr. – Critical Facilities & High Technology Manufacturing, OSIsoft

David has been a technology industry executive and engineer for over 21 years. With career work ranging from materials science and semiconductors to software, he has manufactured computer chips or built semiconductor manufacturing equipment and industrial software systems for over 15 years. With OSIsoft, he has program managed a portfolio of accounts spanning microgrids, data centers and large-scale wind and solar photovoltaic power plants, and he has deployed architecture and software for real-time data acquisition infrastructure to hundreds of assets. Dave holds a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley.

The webinar addresses some of the biggest obstacles to funding mid-scale or community-scale solar projects and explores creative solutions for overcoming those obstacles.

There is enormous opportunity in deploying proven clean energy technologies - yet financing remains the primary obstacle. Larger deals get funding from major banks and investors using tax-equity and other strategies. Yet smaller developers represent the bulk of the clean energy workforce, and the majority of projects on businesses, homes and schools. Expiration of the Federal Investment Tax Credit 1603 Cash Grant program at the end of 2011 will likely drive many of these solar developers out of work, with serious consequences for the emerging clean energy marketplace.

Three expert panelists – Adam Boucher of Adam Capital, Greg Saunders of Tioga Energy, and Matt Scullin of New Resource Bank – offer unique perspectives on the market, as well as examples of how lenders, banks and solar companies can form creative partnerships to get the money where it needs to go in building a diverse, resilient clean energy industry. Adam Boucher

As CEO and Founder of Adam Capital, Adam specializes in bridging the financing gaps for distributed scale solar developers. Over the past three years, the company has funded hundreds of projects and provided over $30 million in loans to build clean energy projects around the country. He is a recognized leader in the field of renewable energy finance.

Greg Saunders

Greg Saunders is a 25-year financial veteran with extensive experience raising debt and equity capital. His proven track record as CFO at Tioga Energy includes successful leadership at three publicly traded companies and two private firms in the real estate and structured finance industries. Before joining Tioga Energy, Saunders served as CFO at Codding Investments, a green business investment firm and developer of Sonoma Mountain Village.

Matt Scullin

Matt Scullin, Vice President at New Resource Bank, focuses on providing construction and project financing for a variety of renewable energy projects, including solar, biogas, biomass and energy efficiency. His deep knowledge of the renewables industry allows him to provide innovative financing for complex or unusual projects, including solar construction.

In this episode of BBMG’s Green Room, chief creative officer Mitch Baranowski chats with SnapGoods co-founder and CEO Ron J. Williams to discuss the company’s contribution to the growing “access economy,” in which consumers participate in both the supply and demand sides of commerce.

SnapGoods allows users to exchange, lend or borrow goods from each other. In addition to providing an exchange network, Williams says the year-old company fosters cooperation between community members while allowing consumers to test-drive products before committing to buying them.

But he adds, “I’ll tell you a secret: The goods are secondary to our system. It’s about facilitating human connections. We’re not saying ‘share because you have to.’ We’re saying share because of the relationships you form. There’s karma in the system. As you build karma, it comes back to you.” 

Williams insists that although the access economy revolves around the consumer, traditional retailers and suppliers still play an integral role in the process and can participate in a way that’s beneficial to their bottom line. And he offers advice for aspiring social entrepreneurs: “Somebody’s already working on your idea. If you’re the person who can pull it along, get your butt in gear; don’t spend six months on crafting the perfect idea.”

“The SnapGoods consumer is very much a New Consumer,” says Baranowski. “It was exciting to talk with Ron about a shift we’ve been tracking over the last few years, from an ownership mindset to one of collaborative consumption—which is, of course, easier on the wallet and better for the environment. We believe the ‘access economy’ will create opportunities for innovative, more sustainable business models.”

In this episode, Yolles talks with BBMG’s Chief Creative Officer Mitch Baranowski about Recyclebank’s strategies for motivating consumers to engage in green behaviors, and its commitment to “the idea that a lot of small, individual actions, when aggregated together, can make a very big and substantial difference.”

Recyclebank—which earlier this year was ranked first on The Wall Street Journal’s list of top clean-tech companies—encourages consumers to recycle and save energy in their homes by rewarding them with points that can be redeemed for products, discounts and coupons for everything from clothes to restaurants. Recyclebank currently has more than 2 million members in over 300 communities in the United States, and has recently entered the U.K. market. The company is currently building an online platform by teaming with brand partners such as Dove, Tide and Purina to create “Learn and Earn” content that will give users additional opportunities to earn rewards by learning about ways they can positively impact the environment.

Yolles says Recyclebank aims to reach mainstream consumers who want to go green but might need an extra nudge. “Most people, if given the opportunity, want to do the right thing,” he says. “Some kind of positive incentive can really motivate a broad cross-section of people to change their behaviors.”

Yolles—who’s led campaigns for Outward Bound, Nike, The Body Shop and others and was a co-founder of sustainable apparel company Nau—also offers advice to budding social entrepreneurs. He explains that he’s always followed his passions: “I’ve tried to integrate my values into my work, and that’s what I would encourage anybody to do.”
