  • One million homes in the U.S. have met Energy Star specifications, according to EPA.
  • The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) says it wants to get 40 percent of its energy from renewables by 2020. As part of that effort, LADWP announced that it signed a least to explore geothermal opportunities in Imperial County, east of LA. "It is offering to lease the land, initially for 5 years of exploration and study at $295,000 annually representing $100 per acre per year," according to CleanTechnica.
  • One of the winners of our Top 10 Green Building Products this year just made it's product a bit more "green." Smith & Fong Co., of San Francisco, which won for its first-in-the-world FSC-certified bamboo flooring, today announced that it has developed a soy-based adhesive system for its line of Plyboo® bamboo plywood and flooring.
  • A venture capitalist will oversee Department of Energy loans to renewable energy and EV companies. Jonathan Silver, co-founding managing director of Core Capital Partners was named to head up the Department of Energy's loan programs.
  • Mother Jones has a fascinating piece up about the devastating drought in California's Central Valley and the competing interest for what little water remains there. Business implications abound as the region braces for the loss of 90 percent of the snow pack in the Sierra Nevadas. People are losing jobs, land is going fallow and looking to remain that way, and cities are going to be thirsty for more water. It's a major conundrum and while this article draws no conclusions, it's an excellent look at the ever-worsening issue of peak water.
  • The International Food Policy Institute has released a new book called "Millions Fed." It looks at the recent history of relative success of feeding the world as the UN hosts a high-level summit on global food security in Rome this week.
