Sustainable Industries Daily Update
- France will add sustainability, human happiness and well being to GDP measurements when looking at national economic well being. The move comes on the advice of Joseph Stiglitz who concluded that measuring a country's GDP is an insufficient measure of how well a country is doing.
- In Seattle, a city that is trying to reduce its waste stream, researchers are attempting to illustrate what happens when something is thrown out. 3,000 pieces of trash will be tagged and tracked to get people thinking about what they throw away and where it ends up.
- Hillsboro, Ore.-based ClearEdge Power announced it received $15 million in Series E funding. The company makes and sells clean and efficient on-site power systems. The purpose for the funds was not disclosed.
- Vu1, a Seattle-based company looking to replace incandescent, CFL and LED bulbs with its own technology today released a first look at its Electron Stimulated Luminescence (ESL) bulb technology.
- In California, the state legislature passed a bill that ups California's renewable portfolio standard to 33 percent by 2020 and limits the amount of out-of-state renewables utilities can purchase. It is unclear if the governor will sign it because localutility districts and small energy producers are urging him to veto it.
- The House of Reps, last week, passed a bill to create program that will study ways to make wind power more effective and efficient in the United States. The bill authorizes $200 million a year for the program studies.
- GE is looking to shore up its offshore wind toolbox. GE announced its purchase of Scan Wind which manufacturers direct-drive gear boxes for wind turbines. The $18.5 million deal is about off-shore wind because direct-drive turbines are more expensive, but require much less maintenance, a requirement for offshore operations.
