Green For All extends a hand to small business

Green For All looks to help small businesses increase capacity.

Small businesses have a key role to play in moving toward a “green” economy, but they could use a little help, according to Green For All.

With that goal in mind, the Oakland-based green jobs advocacy organization in August 2009 rolled out an initiative to support small businesses while increasing their capacity to create green-collar jobs.

Funded by foundations and individual donors, the new Capital Access Program (CAP) includes an education program, a small business incubator and links to funding opportunities.

The incubator program, which began in early 2009 and connected 20 entrepreneurs with mentors, is expanding in November to reach more businesses in more cities, says Green For All CEO Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins.

The education program—which includes business tools and Webinars—focuses on business development and integration into the New Economy. Green For All is also looking to connect businesses with investment groups, venture funds and individual investors.

While CAP won’t have a membership base, there are criteria for participation, including requiring that businesses provide products or services that minimize the negative impact of climate change and create “quality” jobs, Ellis-Lamkins says. For the incubator program and for inclusion in investment summaries, CAP is looking for revenue-generating businesses with at least one year of operating experience, or nonprofits focusing on underserved communities, especially in the organization’s target communities, including Oakland, San Jose and Seattle.
